October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This disease crosses all demographic lines, and as such nearly everyone knows someone who has fought valiantly against it. This month is set aside to maximize attention and support, especially in regards to early detection and treatment.
There are about 1.38 million new cases of breast cancer diagnosed annually, making it far and away the most common cancer in women globally. The disease seems non-discriminatory; evidence in both developed and developing countries. In low- and middle-income countries the rate of incidence has been rising up steadily, perhaps related to gains in life expectancy, and the proliferation of western lifestyles. There is not adequate knowledge on the causes of breast cancer. Because of this, early detection is the best possible way to fight the disease; an early detected case, with sufficient treatment , is considered highly curable especially here in the West.
Symbol of Hope
Many are aware of the “pink” association for Breast Cancer Awareness month – from ribbons to pins, from t-shirts to watch bands – October events are often awash in a sea of pink, which symbolizes the hope of a cure. With this in mind, when sending flowers to someone who is dealing with – or has beaten – breast cancer, pink is the color of the day.
There are some fundraising events happening if you would like to participate on the local level. One of the biggest ones is the American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walks taking place in San Francisco on October 24th, and then in Silicon Valley on October 31st. Learn more by visiting their website here: http://bit.ly/1JyxIzy! We will also be doing a Lend a Hand donation with the American Cancer Society.
