Honoring Memorial Day with Flowers

memorial dayIn May of 1868, General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, instituted the first day to remember U.S. fallen soldiers. Fittingly, the holiday’s beginning included flowers as an intrinsic part of the remembrance. Originally naming it Decoration Day, the General declared that the 30th of May would be set aside β€œfor the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country.”

Celebrated in honor of both Confederate and Union soldiers of the Civil War, the first Decoration Day included 5,000 participants who decorated over 20,000 graves at Arlington National Cemetery. Interestingly, the southern states did not celebrate the day until after World War I, when it was changed to honor the fallen of all wars, not only the Civil War. The tradition of recognizing the bravery and sacrifice of our fallen military personnel continues today, and Ah Sam Florist proudly offers several floral selections to honor your heroes.

Ah Sam Florist offers a traditional Patriotic Wreath which will be a beautiful tribute. You might also consider our striking Red Rose Garden Cross or the simply elegant Serenity Wreath.
