Floral Design Day began as a simple way to honor the birthday of Carl Rittner, the founder of Rittner School of Floral Design in Boston. Rittner was one of the first people to teach designing flowers and natural elements as an art form, and the industry owes a debt of gratitude to his dedication and passion in this area. At Ah Sam Florist, we thought that a great way to celebrate this special day would be to shine the spotlight on one of our amazing local designers – meet John W. Feddersen! John is a designer in the greenhouse, and he also handcrafts designs for the retail store and website, as well as creating the looks for both residential and corporate spaces.

John has worked as a designer in the San Francisco Bay area for 30 years, and we have been privileged to have him as a part of the Ah Sam team for the last 4 years. He joined us as a plant designer and took on the responsibility for the exquisite Ah Sam signature orchid gardens.
John loves working with exotic plants and flowers, most notably orchids. His passion is designing, as well as helping his customers more fully understand the diversity of both orchids and houseplants, and teaching people how to care for these beautiful plants. His favorite responsibility at work is creating the garden designs for Ah Sam Florist’s website.

If you are looking for an orchid or European garden design for your residence or corporate setting – or even if you just want to learn more about orchids- John is the man to speak to. Not only does he have enormous talent, but he loves his work, and it shows every day. “It’s a great honor to work at Ah Sam”, says John “it is a new challenge every day!”

Come to Ah Sam Florist of San Mateo to meet John and the rest of our awesome team. We are carrying on the tradition that Carl Rittner began a century ago – designing flowers and plants and transforming them into true works of art.
