“He didn’t tell me how to live; he lived, and let me watch him do it.”
-Clarence Budington Kelland, American writer (1881-1964), about his father
Fathers teach us so many things in life, whether the lessons are deliberate or we simply watch and learn. The floral designers at Ah Sam Florist know that dads who set strong examples for their children should be celebrated. This year, Father’s Day falls on June 17th and is a great chance to thank your dad for the impact he’s made in your life. Send a card, take him to lunch, or gift him with a special item that reflects everything he is to you.
It’s time to give Dad his due – after honoring Mom on Mother’s Day, June 18 allows us to recognize the 70 million men across the United States we call “Dad”. And while these guys often stay out of the spotlight, we know that everyone loves to be thanked for their efforts. No matter if married or a single dad, we think they are awesome. The experts at Ah Sam Florist have collected several gifts we think your Dad will appreciate – after all, on Father’s Day, he deserves all of the love and respect.
Observed here in the United States on the third Sunday in June, this year we celebrate our Dads on June 19th. Although considered a “second Christmas for fathers” in the retail industry, the holiday is not just a consumer creation – the day is recognized in various ways in over 142 countries across the globe.
Just a few months after the first Mother’s Day in 1908, Grace Clayton began campaigning for a similar honor for fathers in West Virginia. In 1912, Methodist pastor J. Berringer suggested a celebration in his hometown of Vancouver, Washington claiming to be the first to observe such a day. Even so, in 1915, Harry Meek, a member of the International Lion’s Club, claimed that Fathers Day was his original idea, and to this day, the Lion’s Club calls him the “Originator of Father’s Day.” Still it wasn’t until 1966, and a proclamation by President Lyndon Johnson, when Father’s Day became official – after over 50 years of debate in Washington.
Regardless of who decided to honor dad, we wholeheartedly agree with the sentiment. Dads are awesome! This year, how about foregoing the neckties and buying a gift he will enjoy for a long time? Green plants, flowering plants and succulents all make attractive and sophisticated additions to an office space. You can even choose one with special meaning – bamboo, for instance, represents good fortune and prosperity in Chinese culture, and would make a meaningful gift for a hard-working dad.
Dads, stepdads, mentors or friends – on Father’s Day, they deserve recognition for their love and support. Ah Sam Flowers has the elegant, trendy, sophisticated, dramatic and useful gifts to match any dad’s personality – what will you find? Stop by our San Mateo shop to explore the options!
Although Father’s Day has only been an official holiday since 1972, it was first celebrated in Spokane, Washington in 1910. But that date in no way marks the beginning of our admiration for our Dads. Archaeologists tell us that nearly 4,000 years ago, a Babylonian boy carved a message to his father in clay. The tablet wished his father good health and a long life; thus becoming the very first Father’s Day card. Now Father’s Day ranks as the 4th most popular day to send greeting cards, with over $100 million in sales yearly.
If you want to raise the bar and send more than a greeting card, the most popular gifts for fathers include shirts and ties; tool sets and high end tools; and fishing rods and golf clubs. This year, how about surprising your Dad with something different that he will really love? If the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach, as the adage says, you may want to consider one of our gourmet gift baskets. The Gourmet Delight Basket is overflowing with cheese, crackers, fruit, chocolate and even wine or champagne. He’ll know how much you love him with every bite.
For a visual gift that will warm up any office, a Bromeliad in a natural look container is a great choice. In shades of red or orange, it brings subtle color and sophistication to any space and reminds him long after the day is gone that he is special to you.
Regardless of how you choose to honor your dad this Father’s Day, Ah Sam Florist of San Mateo has a wide selection of gifts created with in mind from the indoor gardens, terrariums or gift baskets.
