The National Secretaries Association was created to acknowledge the contributions of secretaries and other administrative staff to the national economy, to encourage their personal development within their chosen career, and to draw more people into the field. The association’s name was changed to Professional Secretaries International in 1981 and, ultimately was renamed the International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP) in 1998.
These changes in name are a reflection of the evolving nature of the job requirements and qualifications of the organization’s members. IAAP now focuses on international membership and issues and continues in its mission to provide ongoing education; as well as to establish standards of excellence accepted by the global business community. The organization’s vision states “to inspire and equip all administrative professionals to attain excellence.”
