April is here, and springtime is in full swing! One of the most iconic flowers of spring is the daisy, and to recognize this fact, daisies have been named the official birth flower of the month. Daisies are cheerful and happy. They evoke a feeling of childhood joy and innocence – and given the newness of spring, they make a perfect ambassador for the season, along with another classic flower of spring, the sunflower. It is believed that the name “daisy” is a variation of “day’s eye” because the entire bloom closes up in the evening, and opens up again in the morning sun.

The most recognizable variety of daisy is the familiar yellow and white bloom, called the shasta daisy, but daisies also grow in other types and colors. These include the African daisy, which have white, orange, yellow or apricot flowers – they also close much closer to the ground than their cousins. Gerbera daisies (or gerberas) are the most popular daisies for floral displays, and their large flower heads exhibit a full spectrum of vibrant colors. If you have ever seen a pink, red, orange or violet daisy, that was likely of the gerbera variety. Of course, they also come in yellow, white and peach. Interestingly, each flower can manifest various shades in its petals.
