In the 1990’s, self proclaimed “Peaceguy” Don Morris created World Peace Day, which occurs on November 17 annually. The “holiday” is not an official event, although over the years the grass roots effort has gained quite a lot of popularity – and for good reason. In a society all too often known for promoting self-interest, this day simply has one request – be kind to one another.

With no logo, no slogan and no official recognition, this movement asks people to pray or meditate for peace, as well as to drive with headlights on all day in a tangible show of support for peace. As Morris points out, peace and kindness begin with each of us individually. To celebrate World Peace Day, consider random acts of kindness towards strangers; or perhaps peace is needed closer to home. This is a day to help us reflect on what is important – relationships, friendships, family – and to extend an olive branch, if needed. Of course, you can always make a symbol of Zen-like peace a fitting gift.

If you’d like to send a different expression of peace, the Peace Lily from Ah Sam Florist seems the obvious choice. It’s name is not the only thing about the lily that signifies peace; green flowering plants are known to cultivate serenity and calm in any space.

This November 17, consider taking a kinder, gentler route, and promote peace in your corner of the world – San Mateo or beyond. Because everyone can use a little more peace.
