International Women’s Day, celebrated on Match the 8^th, is a worldwide awareness campaign aimed at achieving gender parity globally. The day is set aside to reflect on progress made, to present an agenda for change and to recognize the courageous acts of ordinary women who have played historic roles in their communities and countries.

In 1977, the United Nations began its backing of the initiative; each year a theme is chosen that will guide the events in over 30 countries. The agenda in 2016 is “Planet 50-50 by 2030: Step It Up for Gender Equality”. The overall goal is to accelerate momentum for the successful implementation of established sustainable goals, most especially achieving gender equality, empowering all women and girls, and ensuring quality education and opportunities for lifelong learning for all.

Here in America, women already enjoy freedoms and equality; in fact women have played an integral role in our history from the earliest days.
