Is there a more important insect than the bee? Ah Sam Flowers thinks not. Bees are responsible for pollinating 1/3 of the plants that provide the food we eat, or 70 of the top 100 food crops. Along with the flowering plants they tend to, bees evolved millions of years ago to become efficient transporters of pollen, unfailing in their efforts to keep their own hives alive (one colony contains 10,000 to 60,000 family members), and in the process, fertilizing the plants they drink from. Without them, our flowering plants would cease to exist, which would halt the production of everything from apples and avocados to coffee and carrots. Read More about We’re Bee Keepers! Floral Design Day began as a simple way to honor the birthday of Carl Rittner, the founder of Rittner School of Floral Design in Boston. Rittner was one of the first people to teach designing flowers and natural elements as an art form, and the industry owes a debt of gratitude to his dedication and passion in this area. At Ah Sam Florist, we thought that a great way to celebrate this special day would be to shine the spotlight on one of our amazing local designers - meet John W. Feddersen! John is a designer in the greenhouse, and he also handcrafts designs for the retail store and website, as well as creating the looks for both residential and corporate spaces.
